Parents of Swami Vivekananda

Viswanath Datta, the father of Narendranath Datta, was an attorney-at-law of the High Court of Calcutta. He was well versed in English and Persian literature and often entertained  his friends by reciting from the Bible and the poetry of Hafiz, both of which, he believed, contained truths unmatched by human thinking. Viswanath Datta was a generous and liberal man. Although he earned quite a lot , he gave away most of it to needy relatives and acquaintances . Swami Vivekananda was the sixth child of his parents. The first five children were female.
Bhuvaneswari Devi, the mother of Swami Vivekananda, was an exceptionally courageous ,kind hearted and pious woman. Not a single person ever returned from her doors empty-handed.  Naraendranath inherited all the traits from his parents.
Before Vivekananda was born, his mother like many other pious woman had observed religious vows, fasted, and prayed so that she might be blessed with a son since all her previous issues were females. She requested one of her relatives of Varanasi to offer special worship to Vireswar Siva of that holy placeand seek his blessings ; for Siva the great God of renunciation. One night she dreamt that this supreme Diety aroused Himself from his meditation and agreed to be born as her son. When she woke , she was filled with joy. She accepted the child as a boon from Bireswar Siva and named him Viereswar. The family however gave him the name Narendranath Datta, for short Narendera.
