The preliminary history and findings about the history of the Dattas of north Calcutta are known in Bengali as Kulin and belonging to the Gandha Banik ( Spice Merchant) caste. As per the ancient novel Manasha Mangal, Chand Banik alias Chand Sadagar used to worship Lord Shiva. According to his quote; "In which hand I have worshipped  Shankar Bhawani, how can by the same hand. I worship goddess Manasha"
From various details and research work, it was found that Chand Sadagar used to live in somewhere in Birbhum, West Bengal in a place known as Champak Nagar. From another research it was found that Dhanapati Saudagar and Srimanta Saudagar is of the same origine as Chand Saudagar. While on Business trip to Ceylone (Srilanka) Danapati Saudagar and Srimanta Saudagar got the dream of Devi Kamala ( Maha Lakshmi) and received her blessings.
There are documents of the origin from late Balaram Datta who is descendants of Chand Saudagar origin of Dhanapati Datta.
Balaram Datta used to stay in Na Para at Burdwan, West Bengal. Later on he shifted around late Seventh Century to Hathkhola, Sovabazar, then under Sutanati village on the sides of Bhagirathi river and started his business. Later on he became famous as Na Para's Datta. The family spread across both sides of Bhagirathi. Bholanath Dutta descendant of Balaram Datta, came from a very poor family and with early death of his father he had to start his livelihood from 13 years of age. He used to work  in the shop of Babu Thakur Das Nag, but he had ambition and wanted to come up in life. On attaining adulthood he  sold the property received from his maternal uncle for Rs 800/- and started business of paper at China Bazar, Calcutta. In a few years time his hard work paid off and he became famous as Paper tycoon. Bhola Nath Dutta started the Shiva Durga Puja in the year 1905 at Bholanath Asram, D/34/43, Benialitola, Godhulia, Varanasi that was one of his residential houses.
